Breaker Panel (free download)

How electricity travels can be compared to a road system.  The electricity starts at your local power supplier.  It travels down the electrical highway until it hits a sign (sub-station), or crossroads.  From there it travels along the power lines to the community transformers (your side or secondary roads).  From the transformers it gets re-directed to your homes breaker panel.  Your breaker panel is the gateway for all the electricity that enters your home and can be compared to a freeway.  Each breaker, or in some cases fuses, is an off ramp into sections of your home.  These breakers direct the electrical flow to various sections of your home, just like the off ramp signs of the freeway.

Identifying these off ramps is very important.  When the city needs to do maintenance on the road system, for safety sake, they will close off a ramp to complete the repairs.  A city worker will not fair to well if traffic is blasting down the off ramp that leads to their area of work.  The same is true of your breaker panel.  By marking each breaker (or fuse) you will know which one to turn off before starting repairs.  That way you can safely complete electrical projects without the threat of live current blasting its way to the receptacle you are working on.
